When I’m feeling really down or stressed, and reading a book just wouldn’t do, I draw. It’s how I cope, especially when dealing with the loss of a pet. This is a doodle I made for Enzo the Pekin Duck.

I always find it hard to explain why I have to take so long editing. The meaning of “Why, is it not good enough yet?” will differ, depending on who’s asking. If it’s somebody who’s always trying to put me down, it has negative connotations. But for innocent friends and relatives who know what a perfectionist I am, it’s just what it is — isn’t my book good enough yet?

And so, another year has gone by. Like any other year, it was both bad and good. I learned to let go of those I needed to, but 2015 also brought some of the best people and experiences in my life. Most are too personal to share, but the ones I can, have more to do with my (hopefully soon-to-be) writing career.

I am not Chinese, but my dad’s adoptive mother was. Lola Goco, as we called her, showed me and my sister a glimpse of the Filipino-Chinese culture when she was still alive. She followed a lot of customs and superstitions, but she never insisted them upon us. She never had to, because Dad always made sure we knew about them.
One such belief Dad told us about is the Ghost Month, the seventh month of the year when ghosts and spirits mingled in the world of the living — our world.

After all we’ve done for her, Poknat just flew up the wall and left. Just like that.
You see, we never really intented to have Poknat. I already have four ducks to care for. Two drakes, two girls — the perfect balance. Poknat came into our lives when my dad took pity on her.
